Honouring the Voices: 40 Years of First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Indigenous Health Research

“Honouring the Voices: 40 Years of First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Indigenous Health Research in Manitoba” is a research project that has worked towards documenting the stories and experiences of health research that has been conducted through the University of Manitoba. Manitoba has been a leader in partnership-based research with First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Indigenous communities, organizations as well as university-based researchers for over forty years. While initial collaborations varied in their degree of collaboration, today’s partnerships reflect a respect for self-determination and Indigenous knowledges. Over four decades, the Manitoba research community has listened and learned from First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Indigenous communities and organizations, and used lessons to transform the context and practice of health research in Manitoba, Canada, and beyond. Still, there is a place for growth: it is time to reflect back, take stock of accomplishments and set the course for the future. “Honouring the Voices” provides an opportunity to come together, hear stories of successes and challenges, and enhance our understandings of the partnerships that produced a revolutionary vision of how to engage in First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Indigenous health research. We conducted over 50 interviews with people who have worked in health research through the University of Manitoba during the past forty years. We created videos, collected photographs, thoughts, ideas, memories and visions of a future where First Nations, Inuit, Metis, and Indigenous research continues to grow, thrive and be a priority. You will be able to find some of these items here. We thank you for being part of the journey, exploring the website, and sharing your stories with us as we continue the dialogue.
